The Property Institute Newsflash: EOCS Raises Concerns Over Overheating During Remediation
The Property Institute (TPI) has received a letter from End Our Cladding Scandal (EOCS) highlighting concerns about the risk of overheating in residential buildings currently undergoing building safety remediation works.
In some affected buildings, temporary measures such as window opening restrictions and limitations on balcony access have been introduced to manage safety risks during remediation. While these controls may be necessary to mitigate one risk, they can significantly reduce residents' ability to ventilate their homes, increasing the potential for excessive indoor temperatures and creating an immediate health and wellbeing concern.
With temperatures forecast to rise to potentially dangerous levels in the coming weeks, EOCS has called on developers, contractors, building owners and building managers to consider what practical measures can be implemented to reduce the risk of overheating for affected residents. The organisation has also urged the Government to issue urgent guidance on managing this issue during periods of hot weather.
TPI considers this to be an important issue and is sharing the letter for awareness. Members may wish to review whether any mitigation measures can be implemented within affected buildings or engage with relevant stakeholders to help reduce the risk to residents during periods of high temperatures.
